FMP (11)

Tuesday began with a peer feedback session, where we spent ten minutes on each other’s work including feedback time. Some work that inspired me was a dream journal with pop up layers of settings and characters, a journal of occasional entries complimented by mark making to reflect emotions, and illustrations that were photos of drapes with mark making developments on top. After seeing this, I decided that cutting into my pages and producing more pop ups and layers would be a better visual experience through my sketchbook, as my FMP is currently focusing on layering various materials and environments.

The feedback I received was also very useful, as my main issue was that my concept wasn’t obvious, which I need others to tell me as it makes sense in my head. I was confused on how to change this, so spoke to my tutor for advice, where she recommended creating a concept board. I was already aware that my pages did not completely flow, but needed peer feedback to clarify this. I already had one concept board which was formed from my research pages, but she said that this looked like a refined version of what I should have started with, and reminded me that the purpose of an initial concept board is to make the concept obvious to viewers. I asked if this should be mainly secondary research images as opposed to illustrations, and she agreed, so I created a simplified and obvious board, which mainly consisted of photos and has enabled me to clearly identify my concept. She also recommended that I reference where I pull my shapes (such as from mark making) from, using fold out or acetate layered pages, which will help the viewer to link ideas more obviously. Reflecting on this, I have taken the initial idea of decorative stitching to bind two parts together from a Frankenstein film cover and integrated this throughout my pages, which also adds textural and presentational interest.

I also swapped sketchbooks with a peer who works in the opposite way to how I do, which helped me to realise the gaps in my own work. From looking at her book, I realised that my development needs to be far more obvious, as it currently looks like I am jumping between several ideas; whereas her sketchbook flowed completely. Her presentation was also far more spacious, which mine needs to be if the ideas do not directly flow. Moving forward, I need to reference all ideas so that there is complete flow to thread all ideas together.

In future projects, I would start with an old fashioned concept board consisting mainly of photos in order to communicate more effectively, regardless of how many galleries I have visited, as I can always make more concept boards.
